Message from Miglena: February

I hope 2021 is off to a great start for you. I cannot believe January came and went so fast. With February being Black History Month, we all have been reflecting on the past and how much work is still needed in the movement towards racial equality.

At AMA Toronto, we are aligning with the work AMA Headquarters is doing in this space. Further, in September our chapter took the DEI Pledge for Chapters, and our own DEI Committee has been looking through this lens into each of our portfolios and programs with a commitment to drive lasting change.

In January, we launched enhanced criteria for Canada's Marketing Hall of Legends, our coveted awards program. These changes have received coverage from various media outlets including The Message, and we hope this will result in increased representation of diversity within this awards program. Nominations for 2021 close on February 15, so nominate a Marketing Legend or a Marketer on the Rise today.

In November, we held a highly engaging DEI Networking event that generated very honest conversations and incredibly strong engagement within our community. In partnership with ACCES Employment, we are holding the next event in our DEI series on February 24. We are incredibly proud to work alongside ACCES to help newcomers in their sales and marketing programs network, learn, volunteer and launch their professional careers in Canada.

We are encouraged by positive developments, such as Profectio’s launch of the Black Excellence Awards, celebrating the achievements of Black Canadians and African Americans in marketing and public relations. On the other hand, this recent BCG Report on the state of anti-black racism in Canada shows the road ahead is still long. And, we welcome  POCAM's Visible & Vocal - the inaugural industry study on the profile, perspectives and trends of BIPOC advertising and marketing professionals. Lastly, this video from AMA Toronto partner Lapse Productions highlights entrepreneurs from the DMZ's Black Innovation Programs.

Join the conversation. Change for the marketing industry begins with all of us.

Onwards and upwards,

Miglena Nikolova
